Laterality

In Norwegian we have the prepositions "ved" and "ved siden av" to indicate laterality. An example can be "Katten sitter ve/ved siden av bordet", which means "the cat sits next to/beside the table". The located object is "katten" and the reference object is "bordet". We have a physical location here, the table.

"Mot" is a preposition denoting the located object is anterior to the reference object, but coincidence is the main relation here. An example can be "Jenta satt mot veggen", which means "the girl sat against the wall". In this example the located object is "jenta" and the reference object is "veggen". In this example I imagine the girl sitting with her back against the wall, but of course there are other interpretations to this sentence as well. In my picture of it however, there is contact between the objects, and we have a physical location involved. "Mot" might be used to locate an object in a concept. An example is "I am against the use of weapons", means "Jeg er mot våpenbruk" in Norwegian. Here "mot" indicates that you are protesting against something.

"Inntil/innved" are two prepositions indicating laterality in Norwegian. An example; "en gutt sitter inntil en sykkel", means "a boy sits beside a bike". We have a physical location here and laterality. The located object is "en gutt" and the reference object is "en sykkel". Coincidence is also the case here.

"Til høyre/venstre for", which means the same as "to the right/left of". Here we assume the viewer-centered projection of the frame of reference. "Til venstre for bilen står en gutt", means "a boy stands to the left of the car". "Gutten" is the located object and "bilen" is the reference object.
